G. Ramachandran was an assistant professor at the Institute for Financial Management and Research between March 1989 and September 1991.

He was invited by the government of India to serve as a consultant from October 1991 to the ministry of finance, the Securities and Exchange Board of India, the Forward Markets Commission and the Disinvestment Commission. He was a consultant to the World Bank for India-specific projects until 2001.

He has contributed to policymaking, institutional structuring and reform, market structures and reform, regulatory reform, the introduction of exchange-traded financial and commodity derivative contracts in India, and the disinvestment of the government’s shares in public sector enterprises (PSEs). He served as senior vice president at UTI Securities in 1997 to facilitate the public offerings of PSE shares.

Since 2001 he has been a consultant to four global investment banks and one central bank. His focus is on analytics for monetary policy; corporate finance; fiscal policy, economic growth and yield curves; sovereign and corporate credit spreads; consumer mortgages; creditworthiness of households; and digital payments and digital money.

Between October 2006 and November 2016, he supported and facilitated the learning and development efforts at the India offshore units of global asset management and investment banking firms.

He was a columnist and writer for The Hindu Business Line between 1994 and 2013.
